Post office is still delivering the goods

A GRAPPENHALL sub postmaster says his post office is still going strong despite the closure of three outlets in Warrington.

Mark Lucas, sub postmaster at Leigh Villas Post Office on Knutsford Road, spoke out in the wake of the closure of three post offices in the town within the past week - Irwell Road, Bridge Lane and Bruche.

And he says pensioners concerned that they would have to use the bank rather than the post office to draw out money should be reassured that outlets such as his remain open for business.

He said: "People are slowly realising that they can pay money and get money over the counter at their post office, they don't have to use the bank. But the information from The Post Office is not good enough.

"The personal touch is what people want rather than having to use cash machines where they do not feel secure.

"Older people especially feel vulnerable when using cash machines and prefer the security that we offer."

Mr Lucas has been in charge of the Knutsford Road post office for three years and says people still rely on the service.

He added: "A lot of people see this as a community place.

"They meet each other at the same time every day or every week. If anyone is not there then we can look out for them.

"We have even had instances where we have alerted the authorities if we have not seen someone for a few days, because many people who use the post office are on their own."

He explained that while some offices have seen profits hit in recent times, the prominent position of Legh Villas means his business has not suffered to the same extent.
