I DO not think I missed the point in Gary Bebbington’s email, rather it was a poorly made one (Warrington Guardian, December 15).

He asked what has the council done for Warrington. Producing good schools is probably the most important thing a local authority can do is run schools.

As for his point about the town centre, Chester is a city with lots of visitors and tourists – of course its offer is better than Warrington.

Storyhouse is glorious and well worth a visit, but shops-wise, it suffers from the same issues as every other city or town centre.

The Debenhams building of Browns for example has sat empty for more than a year. There are plenty of other empty units.

It may also have escaped Mr Bebbington’s attention that Chester unveiled its revamped market last month – a building pretty much modelled on Warrington’s.

Parts of Warrington town centre are struggling, that is clear. But has he been to the market on a lunchtime or evening? It is packed and vibrant, with lots of places to eat and drink.

It is literally a template for success for other towns.

Warrington gets a lot wrong, but it gets a lot right too. To suggest it will be dead in a year is total nonsense.

But I would expect nothing more from someone intent on seeing the bad side – or at least filling the Guardian letters page with his doomsday rantings.
