WITH reference to the article in the Guardian regarding the saying ‘Bally Anne Day’ (Warrington Guardian, August 16).
I am in my 80s and clearly remember my mother explaining it was actually Barley and Day which was barley broth and any leftover bits of vegetables and maybe a bit of spam that was usually all that was left on the day before pay day.
Another saying was ‘on your beam ends’ meaning we were hardup.
