RE Bob Whittaker’s letter in last week’s Warrington Guardian (November 30).
Yes! I remember it well, the Garnett’s tower.
At the time I was employed by Warrington Co-operative Society in its education department in a little office in the now-ruined Unitarian school room.
This building backs on to the Garnett’s wall.
The Co-op Bank and offices were on Cairo Street and one of my favourite jobs was to collect a Co-op newspaper from the CWS print works for distribution to the Women’s Guilds etc.
Years later the council used the single-storey section which, I understand, is to be saved and renovated.
It’s good to see the old London Plane tree still surviving in the garden of the Unitarian Church.
I’ve taken photographs of the water tower for posterity.
