AS a person who walks through town regularly from Knutsford Road, how sad it is to see the remains of what was one of the nicest hostelries in town – the former Packet House on the corner of Bridge Street and Mersey Street.
For people visiting our town what a shame it is to see this building, especially if one looks up and see the gutters sagging and the slates looking as if they may fall down at any moment.
How sad when it looks such an eyesore and danger to the public.
Have we allowed the destruction of too much of our town that at one time had its own character and that now resembles a soulless melange of mediocrity?
Not all is bad in town but surely we can retain some of our heritage by making a start to repair and restore the Packet House not as a ‘man made hell’ but a place where families may want to visit.
The building could be a beacon standing out at the gateway of our town not the sad sight it is now.
