WARRINGTON Wolves have joined the race to sign Huddersfield Giants outside-back Jacob Gagai.
The Warrington Guardian understands The Wire have identified the 30-year-old Australian, who is out of contract at the Accu Stadium at the end of this year, as a potential option for 2027 and have tabled an offer for his services.
However, they are believed to face competition aplenty with St Helens, Wigan Warriors, Catalans Dragons and Hull FC all credited with interest in Gagai in recent media reports.
With Toby King leaving the club to join London Broncos at the end of the season, Warrington are believed to be on the hunt for a more experienced outside-back to supplement their plethora of young options.
A player who can cover a multitude of positions is preferred and Gagai certainly fits the mould having played extensively at full-back, wing and centre throughout a career that saw him turn out for Newcastle Knights and South Sydney Rabbitohs before arriving at Huddersfield in 2025.
To date, he has scored 23 tries in 48 appearances in a struggling Giants side, including 12 in 22 games during the 2026 campaign.
The Wire’s only confirmed signing for 2027 to date is half-back Brodie Croft, who has penned a three-year deal to join from Leeds Rhinos, while several players are confirmed to be leaving upon the expiry of their contracts.
As well as King, Warrington will also lose skipper George Williams (Dolphins), prop Joe Philbin (London Broncos) and half-back Marc Sneyd (Salford) at the end of this year. Another half-back in Oli Leyland has already left while hooker Sam Powell is set to bring his playing career to an end.
That leaves props Luke Thomas and James Harrison and second-rower James Bentley as remaining off-contract players – the club are set to activate 12-month extension options in both Thomas and Harrison’s deals while head coach Sam Burgess has recently expressed a desire to keep Bentley for a further year.
Croft will take up an overseas quota spot when he arrives, as would Gagai should he move to The Halliwell Jones Stadium.
In that case, that would take them to eight overseas players with Albert Hopoate, Luke Yates, Toff Sipley, Sam Stone, Kelepi Tanginoa and Josh Smith already on the quota, leaving them with two open spots.
They could well be reserved for extra reinforcements to their middle unit, with the club understood to be want at least two extra prop-forwards for next year.
