IN what was his first appearance of the year on Friday, Stefan Ratchford showed his goal-kicking radar was still very much in focus.

Having finished last year as Super League’s leading tee-kicker, he has started 2024 in familiar fashion to the point he is now closing in on a competition record.

Warrington Wolves’ club captain kicked five goals from as many attempts in the 30-8 win over Castleford Tigers in Round Three before leaving Josh Thewlis to attempt the conversion for the winger’s own try in the final minutes, which he put just wide from the right touchline.

It means Ratchford has now hit the target with his last 33 attempts at goal in Super League fixtures, with his last miss coming in the defeat at Leeds Rhinos last August.

That puts him just six short of the Super League record for consecutive successes from the tee, which is currently held by Leeds’ Papua New Guinea international back-rower Rhyse Martin.

Martin also shares the first-class record of 41 successful kicks in a row alongside Liam Finn and Jamie Ellis.
