FORMER Warrington Wolves back Jake Mamo has retired from rugby league due to injury.

In his pre-match press conference today, Andy Last – interim head coach of the Australian’s current club Castleford Tigers – confirmed Mamo had made the decision to step away from the game at the top level due to an ongoing back issue.

The 28-year-old had just started his second season at Castleford, whom he joined after a three-year spell at The Halliwell Jones Stadium had come to an end.

He established himself as a popular figure during his time at Warrington and made 56 appearances for the club over three seasons, scoring 29 tries.

Before joining The Wire, Mamo spent his first two seasons in England with Huddersfield Giants having started his career in the NRL with Newcastle Knights.

"Jake has been suffering with a back injury and due to medical reasons with regards to his body he's made a decision he's going to retire from top-level rugby league,” Last said.

“That came as a bit of a shock but he's suffered a couple of knocks, a couple of bangs to the head and he couldn't quite shake off this back injury so he's come to that decision.

"He's got through pre-season okay, picked up a knock in one of the games and struggled to shake it off.

“He's got some scarring from a mental point of view with regards to some injuries he got earlier in his career and it's impacted how he's feeling moving forward."
