FORMER Warrington Wolves head coach Tony Smith has been stood down from his duties as Hull KR head coach.

Smith, who had already confirmed he would be leaving the club at the end of the year, departs following Saturday’s 28-6 loss at bottom side Toulouse Olympique.

The Craven Park job was his first in rugby league since bringing an eight-year reign as Wire head coach to an end in 2017 having helped the club to three Challenge Cup titles.

His three years in East Yorkshire have seen him turn the club into play-off contenders, reaching the Super League semi-finals at Warrington’s expense last year before eventually losing to Catalans Dragons.

However, a run of just one win in eight games has seen their bid to reach the top six this time around hit the buffers.

Rovers have confirmed assistant coach Danny McGuire will take charge until the end of 2022, when Australian Willie Peters arrives to take over as head coach.

They are due to visit The Halliwell Jones Stadium to take on The Wire later this month, with the game set to take place on July 22.
