WARRINGTON Wolves’ 4-0 victory over Hull FC at The Halliwell Jones Stadium on Friday had club statisticians searching through the record books.

The game was only the second in the history of Super League not to feature a try and the first since 2007 when Salford beat Harlequins 5-2.

It was also the joint lowest-scoring game in the competition’s history, with the 4-0 score having been registered on three previous occasions, and the first time no tires have been scored in a match at The Halliwell Jones Stadium.

In the earliest days of rugby league, from 1895 onwards, scoreless games were quite common but Warrington’s last 0-0 draw was in December 1974 at Salford in the final of the BBC2 Floodlit Trophy.

Warrington’s narrowest defeat was the 1-0 reverse against Workington Town at Wilderspool in November 1979.

Despite heavy rain, scrum-half Arnie Walker kicked a well-taken drop goal for Town while the normally reliable Steve Hesford missed three kickable penalties.

In June last year, Warrington achieved an impressive 6-2 win at St Helens with a try from Ben Currie and Gareth Widdop goal in a performance that was based – like Friday’s win over Hull FC – on rock-solid defence.

That revived memories of a 6-4 victory over Wigan at Central Park on New Year’s Day 1987 when centre Paul Cullen scored the only try and Paul Bishop added the conversion.

Warrington also beat St Helens 4-2 at Wilderspool in the third round of the Challenge Cup in March 1969 when two penalty goals from full-back Jeff Bootle sealed victory in front of a crowd of 10,775.

Seven years later, Warrington beat Wigan 3-0 at Wilderspool on New Year’s Day 1976 when Derek Whitehead kicked a penalty goal and a drop goal.

The most famous 4-0 victory in the club’s history came against Featherstone Rovers at the Willows, Salford, in the final of the Captain Morgan Trophy in 1974.

On a cold, wet January afternoon Derek Whitehead kicked two penalties – both from 45 yards – to claim the man-of-the-match award and give Warrington the first of four trophies that season.

To win a low-scoring game you need a reliable goalkicker, such as Stefan Ratchford, Jeff Bootle or Derek Whitehead.

Warrington have not won a match 1-0 (so far) but have recorded some 2-0 victories, mainly before World War Two.

The last 2-0 win came at Salford in December 1946 when a drop goal from the Welsh stand-off Mel de Lloyd (then worth two points) was the only score.

Low-scoring games can be thrilling affairs but, on balance, I think we would all prefer to see a few tries scored!

Winners are 'grinners'!

Hesford gets the boot
The last league game Warrington won without scoring a try was back in September 1978, when we beat Workington Town 13-10.

Steve Hesford got 5 goals and a drop goal, with hooker Tony Waller kicking two further drop goals.

N'ull points.
The last time we nilled Hull was the the first season after the Second World War, 25-0, when a centre called Mike Quick, was 'too fast' off the mark, scoring 16 points.
