WOLVES are not panicking about a misfiring attack with Tony Smith instead suggesting his side need to rectify simple mistakes.

Thursday’s 12-4 defeat to Wigan Warriors saw Wolves post the lowest score of Smith’s reign.

But with Warrington struggling for points against some of Super League’s tougher defences, the head of coaching and rugby is seeking consistency from his charges when they visit Huddersfield on Sunday.

“We can’t expect against a good defence or poor defence to score points when we turn the ball over on the second and third tackle,” he said.

“If we are not making those sorts of errors and still not scoring points then we’ll be concerned.

“When there’s good reason for us to look at the Wigan game and say we didn’t build enough pressure and enough attack then it’s fairly obvious reasons – we need to rectify the simplicity of our mistakes.

“Some combinations and our kicking game wasn’t great, but the week before (at Salford) we were fantastic, so we want to become consistent and that takes time.”

Smith is also keen to build on what he felt was a ‘brutal’ defensive display against Wigan.

“The game highlighted the need to spend more time on the fluency of our attack,” he added. “But there’s a fine balance in maintaining our defence.

“Our defence was outstanding last week, brutal at times. We had a couple of blemishes and Wigan made us pay.”

Skipper Ben Westwood, lauded by Smith for his ‘inspiring’ display against Wigan, agrees errors must be cut.

“We were dropping the ball on plays one and two, and it killed us. It’s draining with the extra defence at times,” he said.

“We need to keep hold of the ball and put plays on. As it was against Wigan, it sends everyone on to a bit of a downer – the team and the fans.”

He also wants the half backs to take charge of affairs.

“We’ve got young half backs who need to take control a little bit more.

“Lee Briers had been here for a long time and took control. Maybe they need to look at how he did it and get some tips.”

Back rower Simon Grix, who has called the shots from half back at times in the past, agrees the side are yet to hit full throttle in attack – even when assembling 44 points in the win at London Broncos.

“With respect to London, we only played 50 minutes of good stuff there,” he explained.

“We should’ve put more points on and we’re probably not quite there in attack yet.

“It’s something we are looking to improve on. We’re reinforcing what we need to do, in our own roles and in regards to the team.”
