WARRINGTON Wolves youngster Leon Hayes led Lancashire to victory in the opening game of this year’s Academy Origin series.

The scrum-half skippered the Red Rose and scored a total of 20 points, which included one try and eight goals, during a 56-24 win over Yorkshire at Widnes’ DCBL Stadium.

He was joined by four of his Wire teammates in the Lancashire side – Jack Darbyshire started in the centres, Jake Thewlis was on the wing and Aiden Doolan was at hooker while Nolan Tupaea came off the bench.

Doolan crossed twice for Lancashire, with Thewlis – the younger brother of first-team star Josh – also touched down.

There were also two Warrington players in the Yorkshire side – Adam Holroyd and Lucas Green started at second row and loose forward respectively and both scored tries.

Lancashire take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series, with the next game to be played at Salford’s AJ Bell Stadium on Sunday, June 26.

The series concludes with Game Three at Wakefield’s Be Well Support Stadium on Sunday, July 24.
