WARRINGTON Wolves’ reserve team will “learn a great deal” from defeat in their first game of the new season.

They were beaten 22-18 by Huddersfield Giants at Victoria Park on Saturday, with two tries in the final quarter allowing the visitors to snatch victory.

A young Wire side scored tries through Morgan Burgess, Leon Hayes and Jack Darbyshire, with Hayes adding conversions for all three.

Danny Evans – one of Daryl Powell’s assistant coaches – will lead the team in 2022 but while he was in Toulouse with the first team, academy head coach Richard Marshall took charge on Saturday.

He said that despite the result, there was plenty for the team to build on ahead of their trip to Castleford Tigers on Saturday.

“After a really poor start to the game we grew as a team and looked to play some positive rugby in the first half and our scramble on defence was excellent at times,” Marshall said.

"We managed a very strong Huddersfield pack well and held up or sent them back through our defensive effort.

“To go in at the break with the game in the balance after our start was first class.

“Unfortunately, we kicked dead from the start of the second half and then through a lack of discipline, we gave Huddersfield multiple chances in the latter stages of the game.

“It was again in the balance with both teams having players in the sin bin.

“With a relatively young team, we felt dissatisfied with the end result as we thought the game was there for us but we will learn a great deal and with only one session together last week I am sure the team will grow again.

“The group will have lots of confidence from this performance I’m sure.”

After Huddersfield had taken an early 10-0 lead through tries from Louis Senior and Ethane Wainwright, The Wire hit back when Burgess reacted quickest to touch down Tom Inman’s grubber kick.

Just before the half-hour mark, Hayes’ kick in behind the defence cannoned off a Huddersfield player and back into the scrum-half’s arms for him to touch down and give the hosts the lead.

However, after Wolves kicked dead to start the second half, Huddersfield pressure led to Ben Tibbs scoring.

Darbyshire twisted out of a tackle to score and give his side the lead again, but Huddersfield were able to edge home thanks to tries from Spencer Peel and Connor Carr.
