Woolston Karate Club in medal haul at WUKF British Open

RUBY Owen led the way as Woolston Karate Club achieved a succession of medal successes in a major event held in Crawley.

The 17-year-old, who is on the Livewire Talented  Athletes Programme, was in outstanding form at the WUKF British Open Karate Championship - the largest karate competition in the UK.

Competing in her discipline of Shito Ryu - her style of karate – in the 15 to 17-year-olds category, she won gold.

Owen also delivered an impressive performance in the all-styles division, narrowly missing out on gold to claim a well-earned silver.

Kings Academy School’s Alice Mairs, 15, who is also on the Livewire Talented  Athletes Programme, came away with two silver  medals in kata (patterned moves).

Also Jake Caldwell, nine, who attends Bradshaw Primary School, Grappenhall, collected silver in kata; Elijah Hunt, eight, who attends Woolston Primary School came away with two silver medals in inclusive kata and combat.

Furthermore, Onia, eight, won silver in kata and bronze in kumite (fighting) and chief instructor Darron Mcquillan, 60, came away with bronze in veteran kata.

Next stop for the club competitors is the WUKF World Championships in Romania in July.
