TONY Thompson has left Warrington Town, the club have confirmed this afternoon.

In a statement, Yellows said they have come to an agreement with the goalkeeper to terminate his contract with the club to allow him to “explore opportunities elsewhere.”

Thompson played in all but one of Town’s games last season having joined from Altrincham, keeping 15 clean sheets in helping them to promotion to the National League North.

And despite the return of former Yellows stopper Dan Atherton in the summer, he started the campaign as first-choice between the sticks and kept three clean sheets in the first four games.

However, he has not featured in the past three games and Town’s statement declared the stopper wanted assurances that he would play every week – something they could not provide.

“After being left out of the starting team for the trip to Brackley Town recently, he (Thompson) expressed his unhappiness at the decision and wanted to be in a position where he was playing every week.

“Both parties have therefore agreed to a termination to enable Thompson to explore opportunities elsewhere.

“The club would like to thank Thompson for his contribution to bringing National League football to the town and wish him well for the future.”
