WARRINGTONIANS have played a huge part in making Wembley history today.

Firstly, three of the town's England internationals helped St Helens to become the first team to win a Women's Challenge Cup Final staged at the national stadium.

And then three more Warrington-produced rugby league talents - along with a stack of former Warrington Wolves players - contributed to Leigh Leopards winning the men's Betfred Challenge Cup for the first time since 1952.

Ex-Crosfields junior Tara Jones has the honour of being able to say she scored the first ever try in a Women's Challenge Cup Final at Wembley, with hers being one of three first-half tries that set Saints on their way to a 22-8 success over Leeds Rhinos.

Then there was a magical moment as long-time pals and former Cardinal Newman High School students Jodie Cunningham and Emily Rudge lifted the cup together, after Cunningham had been named player of the match.

It was a day the England captain and former skipper capped incredible careers that started with winning successive titles in their school team.

There was much more emotion and drama still to come though.

Warringtonians Ed Chambers, Gareth O'Brien and Joe Mellor were in the Leigh 17 which defeated Hull KR 17-16 in golden-point extra time.

O'Brien had five more ex-Wire players for company too - with Josh Charnley, Robbie Mulhern, Jack Hughes, Matt Davis and Oliver Holmes all getting their hands on winners' medals.

After O'Brien had one drop-goal effort drift wide in extra-time he looked set for a second go when Leigh next had the ball. But as he was being hounded by onrushing defenders, O'Brien smartly shifted the ball wider to Lachlan Lam and the Papua New Guinea international sealed the deal on an absorbing final.
