WARRINGTON Rylands have confirmed James Neild as their captain for the coming season.

The versatile defender/midfielder, who is currently among the club’s longest-serving players, will take over the armband from veteran midfielder Dean Furman.

Since joining from Trafford midway through the 2021-22 season, Neild has made 62 appearances for Blues.

In that time, he has helped them to promotion from the Northern Premier League West Division and a solid top-10 finish in their first ever campaign at Step Three.

Now, Neild insists the aim for the club is to push for promotion this coming year.

"I’m really happy and honoured to be announced captain,” he said.

“It really shows the trust and belief that the gaffer and his team has in me, which fills me with confidence.

“It really helps sharing a dressing room with such experienced lads, who can help me become more mature and a better captain for the team.

“I’m just hoping to lead by example and push for promotion this year."

Manager Michael Clegg, who is preparing for his first full season in charge at Gorsey Lane, believes Neild is the perfect representation of the squad and club as a whole.

"For me, it was a no-brainer to have Neildy as our skipper this year,” he said.

“Having two mentors in Deano and Sam (Egerton) will be a huge help as these two have been really supportive in this decision.

“I think when you appoint a captain, you look at someone who represents you and the club, and he does that.

“His work rate and ability are exceptional and he still could go higher, so hopefully this will be another step in his journey."

Blues host Alvechurch in their first home friendly tomorrow – kick off is at 3pm and entry into Gorsey Lane is free.

The club have also confirmed a home pre-season game against Bolton Wanderers’ ‘B’ team on Tuesday evening, kick off 7.30pm, ahead of their opening NPL Premier Division game of the season at home to Radcliffe on August 12.
