GREAT Sankey High School’s national cup-winning footballers have been given the VIP treatment at Warrington Town Hall.

Members of the Year Seven team that emerged victorious in the English Schools FA Playstation National Cup were welcomed to a civic reception alongside teachers and parents to celebrate their victory.

Having won through nine rounds against local, regional and national opposition, they lined up against Shenfield High School of Essex in the final held at The Hawthorns, home of West Bromwich Albion FC.

They emerged as 2-1 victors thanks to goals from Jack Waters and D Sulaivani.

“I was delighted to welcome the team to the Town Hall, meet all of the talented players and congratulate them on their incredible achievement,” said Mayor of Warrington, Cllr Jean Flaherty.

“Their success is no doubt thanks to their hard work and talent as well as the support from the team, teachers and parents.

“The players should be very proud, and I’m sure this success will inspire a future generation of footballers and sporting champions!”

Great Sankey, led by Andy McCann, head of KS4 at the school, had beaten Northampton School for Boys 3-2 in their semi-final to reach this special day in the school and town's history.

They made the most of their trip, as the group stopped off at St George's Park – the FA's national football centre – for a tour and training session before watching some of the other cup final action at The Hawthorns and then heading to their overnight hotel.
