PENKETH’S Tara Jones was among the tryscorers as England’s women got their Rugby League World Cup campaign off to a flying start.

The hooker touched down in the second half as England beat tournament debutants Brazil 72-4 in the opener, diving over from close range after spotting a gap at dummy-half.

Jones was joined in the starting line-up by fellow Warringtonians and St Helens teammates Emily Rudge and Jodie Cunningham as Craig Richards’ side ran in 14 tries at Headingley.

Amy Hardcastle and Courtney Winfield-Hill both ran in hat-tricks, with Tara-Jane Stanley scoring two tries and kicking seven conversions.

Caitlin Beevers, Fran Goldthorp, Leah Burke and Liv Wood also touched down for England while Brazil got a historic first World Cup try courtesy of Natalia Momberg in the second half.

England’s next game sees them take on Canada at Wigan’s DW Stadium on Saturday ahead of the men’s quarter-final between the host nation and Papua New Guinea.
