BEN Westwood described England’s Four Nations campaign ‘a bit disappointing’ as the tour Down Under ended with a 36-10 victory over huge underdogs Papua New Guinea in Auckland this morning.

Following defeats against New Zealand and Australia, England avoided the wooden spoon at Eden Park but were far from convincing.

Wolves player of the year Westwood, speaking straight after the final hooter on Sky Sports, said: “We were a bit under par, as we were on the whole tour.

“It’s a bit disappointing but we picked up some positives. It’s a young squad and this was a learning curve.”

Westwood, one of England’s most impressive performers in the opening two games, was not as strong against the hard-hitting Kumuls with a defence that Westwood described as ‘like hitting a brick wall’.

His Wolves teammate Ben Harrison will not forget his second England Test appearance, marking his first game against PNG with a debut try for his country.

He notched the first of only two tries scored by England in a second half they won 12-10.

The tough Cumbrian, who played the final 35 minutes off the bench, steamed on to an offload from Wigan’s Sam Tomkins and twisted out of a two-man tackle to touch down with a twist.

He had to wait for confirmation as video referee Russell Smith took a look at a possible obstruction from Wolves teammate Garreth Carvell ahead of Tomkins’ initial burst but it was an easy decision.

Westwood kicked the second of his three conversions to make it 30-0 with 54 minutes gone but the expected floodgates did not open.

Stanley Gene’s mostly part-timers dug deep and responded with two tries, while England struggled to cope with losing half backs Kevin Brown, two-try Luke Robinson and prop Sam Burgess with injuries.

Harlequins centre Tony Clubb’s fourth try of the game rounded off the scoring and the tour, with Steve McNamara’s men setting off home from New Zealand on Monday.
