PHIL Cooper has once again cut his opponents down to size in the British Autograss Championships.

The Burtonwood racer added to his impressive list of titles this season, claiming the British title in class eight and class nine vehicles, as well as being crowned the ‘fastest man on grass’ for the third time in his career.

It is the seventh time he has won the class nine event in the last eight years, indicating a staggering period of dominance over the rest of the field, particularly when you consider Cooper only turns 25 this year.

After a poor start to the season, he rallied in the second half of the campaign to romp to victory.

“Halfway through the year things seemed to be going against us but in the last few British Championship rounds it came together and I won the titles in round four of the class nine and in the final stage of class eight,” he said.

“After a tough start it felt great to do that, especially for everyone that helps and sponsors me.”

His remarkable season was capped off with an appearance on television show Fifth Gear, where former Top Gear stunt driver ‘The Stig’, revealed in August to be Touring car driver Ben Collins, jumped in his 176bhp class eight car and competed in Nottingham’s Winter Series under the tutelage of the Warrington champion.

Due to be aired tomorrow, Friday, Cooper will be seen teaching the TV celebrity racer, who is the new preesenter on Channel Five’s Fifth Gear programme.

He said: “No-one has driven my car before so I was a bit dubious to start with, but with all the stuff he’s done in the past it shows that he is a very skilful driver and a sensible lad, so we decided he would be okay.

“Ben took to it very well and surprised a lot of people by getting it so quickly.”
