WARRINGTON Wolves have paid tribute to their former winger Dennis Curling, who passed away earlier this week.
The Welshman, who played for The Wire during the 1970s, passed away on Monday at the age of 76.
After his talent emerged while playing rugby union for Aberavon, he was signed by Alex Murphy in the summer of 1972 to play professional rugby league, joining fellow Aberavon old boys such as Bobby Wanbon, Mike Nicholas, Clive Jones and Frank Reynolds.
He went on to play 135 times for the club, including 29 appearances during a 1973-74 campaign that remains The Wire’s most successful in terms of trophy count as they scooped the Challenge Cup, the Club Championship, the Captain Morgan Trophy and the Players’ No6 trophy.
Curling scored 35 tries for Warrington before his career was cut short at the age of 27 when, during a 1977 Locker Cup match against Wigan in which he had already scored a try, he suffered a broken neck.
Warrington held a testimonial match to raise funds for Curling which featured the great Brian Bevan pulling on the primrose and blue for one final time.
“Dennis Curling will be remembered at Warrington as a rapid and fearless winger whose career was tragically cut short by injury,” the club said in tribute.
“His rugby career was a big part of his life and Dennis’ family are incredibly proud of the legacy he leaves behind.
2Warrington Wolves send their deepest sympathy to his family and friends.”
