Sam Burgess on potential loan move for Warrington Wolves man

And if reports are to be believed, a longer-term loan move back to Hull FC could be on the cards for the prop next year – and Sam Burgess is refusing to rule it out.

The “in-and-out” nature of Wood’s first-team involvement during 2026 has caused frustration among Wire fans, many of whom clearly believe he has been deserving of a more sustained run in the team.

He does currently find himself in Burgess’ 17 having featured in each of Warrington’s last three games – the joint-most number of matches he has played in a row this season – but he has also spent time either in the reserves or out on loan.

Among those spells away from the club have been two separate moves to Saturday’s hosts, for whom he has played five Super League matches this season and as such, he is being linked in various media reports to a season-long loan move back to the Black and Whites in 2027.

Next year is the final season of Wood’s Warrington contract, although the club hold an option in their favour to extend that by 12 months should they wish.

And when asked what Wood’s longer-term future may hold, Burgess admits there are conversations that need to be had about that very subject.

“I’ve heard of that one,” he said when asked about rumours linking the 21-year-old with a return to Hull.

“It’s a discussion we probably need to have in terms of what works best both ways.

“I know he spent a bit of time there and did a good job, but at the moment he's in our team and doing a good job.”

There will be some turnover in Warrington’s middle unit for 2027 – Joe Philbin is leaving to join London Broncos while Jordy Crowther has been linked with a move to Huddersfield Giants. James Harrison and Luke Thomas are also off-contract but The Wire are believed to have activated 12-month extension options in both of their deals.

Meanwhile, two new prop forwards in Mackay Cutters’ Mitchell Prest and Penrith Panthers’ Toby Crosby will join the club next year.
