MATT Dufty is arguably the most high-profile player on Warrington Wolves’ off-contract list currently.

And if he continues his sparkling early-season form, there would no doubt be many suitors if he does enter the open market in the coming months.

However, he insists his future is very much at the back of his mind and he is instead focused on building his increasingly impressive form.

Across the first four rounds of 2024, Dufty has seven try involvements – the joint-most in the competition alongside Leeds’ Ash Handley and St Helens’ Jack Welsby – having touched down three times and set his teammates up on four occasions.

Having made 693 metres with ball in hand, too, he is second in the Super League metre-making charts behind Handley.

Warrington are said to be keen to retain him beyond this year when his current contract expires, but the full-back insists no decisions have been made yet.

However, he say that The Wire is where he wants to be should he decide to remain in England.

“It took me a while to settle in but I really have now. Over here, there’s nowhere I’d rather be than Warrington,” he said.

“The team’s been really good for me and it makes me want to do more.

“The club has a really good atmosphere around it and everyone is enjoying it.”

On his future plans, he added: “We haven’t really discussed that – I’m trying to stay level-headed and not get too ahead of myself.

“I’ve had a few chats with my manager but if I’m going to stay over here, Warrington is where I want to be.

“I love it here, but we’ll see what happens.”

One stat in which Dufty is leading the competition is the number of carries he has made.

In all, he has taken the ball in 83 times across the first four matches including several yardage carries late in sets.

The 28-year-old says getting more involved in general play was certainly part of the plan head coach Sam Burgess and attacking assistant coach Martin Gleeson had for him and for now at least, it is paying dividends.

“There were a lot of things I wanted to work on for this year, and I think the back end of last year really built me towards improving,” he said.

“Sam came in with Gleese and had a lot of things they wanted me to work on and I feel like I’ve started well.

“I’m pretty happy with the way I’ve been going but it’s only Round Four. I can’t get ahead of myself.

“Last year, I feel into the trap of only playing when we were in good-ball.

“This year, I’m taking carries on plays four and five and getting involved more, even when we’re not in attacking positions. I’m always in the game now and it seems to be working.

“I’ve started the way I wanted to and have slowly felt more and more confident each week. There’s a lot of improvement left in me but I’m happy with the way I’m building my season.”

Dufty’s displays have been integral to The Wire’s positive response to losing in Perpignan in Round One and as such, they head to London Broncos on Sunday bidding for a fourth straight win.

It is a game Warrington will be heavily favoured to win with the newly-promoted Broncos having lost all four of their games thus far, but Dufty insists the squad have had any element of underestimating their opponents drummed out of them.

“Some teams may fall into that trap but Sam and the coaching staff were on top of that. They nipped that in the bud straight away,” he said.

“We’re taking London very seriously and we’ll treat it as if we’re playing any other team.

“I watched them against Wigan and when Wigan were trying to go sideways, it was only 22-16 but once they got into that grind and got them for long stretches, that’s when they got away and started to dominate.

“We’ll look to build our gameplan as they’ve played good teams. They’ll be up for playing us so we’ll have to be up for playing them.”
