WARRINGTON Wolves are now faced with preparing to face the same opponent in back-to-back fixtures.

However, winger Josh Thewlis insists they must “get the job done” in their Super League trip to London Broncos on Sunday first before attention can turn to progressing past the men from the capital in the Challenge Cup.

Monday’s sixth-round draw paired Sam Burgess’ side with London, meaning they will meet at The Halliwell Jones Stadium a week after they do so in the league at the Cherry Red Records Stadium.

They will be favoured to win both games against their newly-promoted adversaries, thereby extending their promising start to the league campaign and advancing down the road to Wembley.

For Thewlis and the players, though, there is one singular focus – improving again and extending their winning run to four matches.

“It's one game at a time for us,” he told the Guardian.

“All of our focus is on Sunday and going down there and getting the job done.

“We’ll then get our bodies right and ready for the cup game to hopefully get two wins from two.

“London are a desperate side and are looking for that first win, so we won’t be taking our foot off the gas.

“If anything, we want to put our foot down – we want to show our best performance at the weekend and then try to back it up the week after.

“We’re making progress but there’s still a lot of work for us to do.

“We’re nowhere near the finished article, but what we are is a tight group of mates.

“We’re all best mates in that changing room and I think that will go a long way on the pitch, but we’re not getting ahead of ourselves.

“The start we had last year was brilliant too, so we’ve just go to keep focused and try to better ourselves.”

London’s two home fixtures this season have resulted in heavy defeats – they were beaten 60-22 by defending champions Wigan Warriors on Saturday having lost 34-0 to Catalans Dragons last month.

Across their four defeats, Mike Eccles’ side have conceded 162 points in total at an average of just over 40 per game.

There will no doubt be expectations placed upon The Wire externally to run up a similarly convincing scoreline, but Thewlis insists they must earn the right to do so first by investing in their defence.

“Sam’s massive on process and building our game, and that will be no different for the London game,” he said.

“We’re not going out there looking to score loads of points – we’ll look for a defensive focus first and foremost.

“We know we have the calibre of players to score points, but it’s about our attitude and whether or not we’re prepared to turn up and defend which we will be.

“We’re coming into this game treating it like any other because London are a good side and they will win games this year.

“If we turn up with that defensive focus to keep turning them away, points will come.”
