A WARRINGTON Athletics Club team won a superb bronze medal in the English National Cross Country Relay Championships on Saturday.

Esme Heavy, Hannah Hull and Imogen Wharton were rewarded for tackling horrendous wet and muddy conditions at Berry Hill Park in Mansfield as they clinched third place in the women’s under 17s race.

The team were led off on the first leg by Heavy, who handed over to Hull in third place.

Hull continued the momentum as she completed her leg in fifth spot.

Wharton clawed back two places on the final stage to seal the team’s bronze.

Warrington AC were also represented in six of the other nine races.

In the under 13s category, an excellent performance led to the boys A team finishing seventh.

Euan Lawton handed over in 28th place, Oliver Davenport in 10th place before Isaac McGuffie brought the team home in seventh.

The B team came home 39th thanks to Harry Millar’s first leg of 39th, Joshua Pryor’s second leg moving them up to 32nd place and Eddie Walker completing the trio’s efforts.

Twenty-seventh position was sealed by the under 13s team of Evie-May Williams, who was 29th on the first leg, Grace Rashud 30th and Eva Hayes, who concluded matters.

At under 15s level, the A team of Emily Kinsey, who was 26th on the first leg, Sinead Gregory, 40th on the second leg, and Sarah Ashcroft finished 41st.

The B team of Ellie Barker, 40th, Cara Gregory, 44th, and Jaycee Morrison finished 50th.

Ellen Turnbull led off the under 20s women’s team which finished 20th. She handed over to Orla Gregory in 39th and she hauled back 15 places before Jess Connolly moved up a further four positions before crossing the line.

In the senior women’s race, the A team of Rachel McQuillan (46th), Faye Lawton (54th) and Emma Pryor came home 58th.

The B team featured Siobhan Gregory, 66th, and Sharon Taylor, 77th, but there was no final leg runner.

Warrington’s senior men’s team finished in 29th position, with the legs being completed by Jordan Jones (56th), Daniel Fox (46th), Cameron Field (31st) and Brandon Quinton.

Meanwhile, following her run at the Yorkshire Marathon last month, Warrington Athletics Club’s Louise Blizzard has been selected to represent England in the over 45 age group at the Chester Marathon on October 6, 2024.

In other races, Claire Andrew was the first woman to finish the St Helens Striders 5 miles Trail Race in Sankey Valley Park on Sunday, finishing in 22nd place overall in 36mins 15secs.

Dan Schofield competed as a guest in the Red Rose Cross Country League at Leverhulme Park in Bolton, getting over the line in 20th place.
