FIVE Warrington bowls competitions have recently concluded in team, pairs and individual formats.

This has led to success for St Oswalds A, St Peters A, St Benedicts B, Jean Wanbon, Karen Galvin and Steve Gilfedder.

Warrington and North Cheshire Bowls Association Warwick Lowe success was achieved by St Oswalds A, who claimed an emphatic victory in the Monday night section’s five-a-side final held at Monks Sports against holders Woolston A.

Both teams had seen off lower division opposition in the semi-finals.

And then the final proved to be a one-sided affair, with the in-form Lee Johnstone storming to his second 21-1 victory of the evening and leaving Woolston with a mountain to climb.

Further wins for St Oswalds then came from Dave Bennett and Larry wells in the remaining singles matches.

In the pairs game, the St Oswalds duo of Carl Armitage and Dave Penketh initially trailed Woolston 10-1 but rallied to win 15-12, resulting in an overall 38 shots win for the Padgate club.

At the Warrington Catholic Bowls League finals day, St Peters A lifted the John Bradbury Challenge Cup while St Benedicts B were winners of the JG Bate Trophy.

Meanwhile, the annual open women’s pairs competition for the May Deakin Trophy was won by Jean Wanbon and Karen Galvin at Padgate Bowling Club.

They came through a field of 17 pairs, repeating their wins of 2019 and 2016.

In the final they defeated Yvonne Cartwright and Brenda Owen 21-11.

After 11 ends Cartwright and Owen led 9-8 but then the winners took control.

In the early rounds, Wanbon and Galvin had 21-13, 21-5 and 21-10 victories, while Cartwright and Owen came through with three 21-17 successes – including the semi-final in which they had trailed 17-10.

The competition was well run by Dave and Anne Hall, with Norman Deakin presenting the trophy.

Elsewhere, Steve Gilfedder won this year’s Bulls Head competition, defeating Jon Bradshaw in the final.
