A GOAL inside the first minute proved enough for Warrington Town to pick up their first ever National League North home victory.

Matty Grivosti struck the winner just 45 seconds into the game against Buxton, lashing beyond Bucks keeper Max Dearnley after being released by Aaron Bennett.

The result makes it two wins from three for Mark Beesley’s side despite being beset by injuries and suspensions.

THIS group of Warrington Town players have produced some memorable performances in recent times – was this up there with them?

Mark Beesley reckons so and all things considered, it is hard to disagree.

Coming into this game, the squad was right down to the bare bones and only an injury away from being able to only name a scratch 11 of senior players.

The fact they emerged victorious in spite of everything is testament to the togetherness and bond these players clearly share as well as the quality they evidently have.

They could not have wished for a more perfect start, with Matty Grivosti driving them in front inside the first minute with an assured finish.

It was a goal made possible thanks to a superbly weighted pass from Aaron Bennett, who was once again among Town’s top performers after a solid debut against Blyth Spartans.

Playing in the “number 10” role behind Connor Woods, he showed flashes of excellence and would have had more assists to his name had the hosts’ finishing been a little more clinical.

Indeed, it as not as though the hosts were hanging on in the end against Buxton – long-time Northern Premier League rivals who acquitted themselves superbly in the National League North last season.

It was them who carried the greater threat in a second half that was managed wonderfully by the experienced axis through the heart of Town’s defence and midfield.

After his needless red card on Saturday, Bohan Dixon owed his teammates a performance and he delivered alongside Sean Williams, while the veteran duo of Tom Hannigan and Peter Clarke were rock-solid at the back.

Evan Gumbs was pressed into service at right back but did admirably while at the other end, Woods and Isaac Buckley-Ricketts ran their blood to water.

When all was said and done, Cantilever Park saw its first ever Step Two home win and if Yellows continue to display this kind of grit and determination, there will be many more.
