WOOLSTON Rovers visit Bradford Dudley Hill on Saturday, looking to end a run of four successive defeats in National Conference League Division Two.

It follows a 38-4 loss at Heworth at the weekend when sub Jake Toher scored their only points.

Rovers head of rugby Mal Holt said: “We are doing things really tough at the minute but we will not let our heads drop.

"We have a lot of quality within our Open Age and I am confident that it is only a matter of time before we get back to winning ways.

"We have had seven or eight changes each week which doesn’t allow us to build any rhythm to our game but hopefully we will see a return for a few of our guys this week."

He added: "Dudley Hill is a notoriously difficult place to go to but we will be ready to give it our best shot and if we do that they we will have a great chance of coming home with the win.”

Toher marked his first game for Rovers with his second-half try, which was some reward for the team's non-stop effort but the scoreline had gone beyond their reach by then.

Heworth opened the scoring in the fourth minute when winger Jay O’Gilvie scored and then seven minutes later centre George Elliott went over for a try that he converted himself and almost immediately winger Billy Sturdy added a third try to cement the home side's early supremacy.

Rovers managed to stem the tide a little with some gritty defending but then right on the stroke of half time Heworth stand-off Danny Allan scored a try. Elliott converted to give his side a commanding 20-0 interval lead.

Six minutes into the second half Heworth increased their advantage when substitute Ben Barnard scored. Elliott converted and five minutes later prop forward Liam Richmond crashed over for a converted try.

Toher touched down in the 60th minute but Heworth substitute Jack Earl wrapped up the try scoring.

Best for Rovers were prop forward Harry Files, stand off Theo Holt and substitute Nathan Maguire.

Holt said: “That was tough for us against a well organised Heworth side.

"They quickly racked up 14 points in the opening 15 minutes of the first half and then two converted tries in 10 minutes at the start of the second half which we had no answer to.

"The other 50-odd minutes we competed really well and looked comfortable against them but the damage had already been done.”

Latchford Albion fell to an agonising home defeat against Shevington on Saturday when the only difference between the two sides was a solitary conversion.

Shevington took the lead four times and Latchford kept responding, but Matty Rudd's last conversion attempt from the touchline was the one that saw them fall to a 24-22 loss.

Winger Gareth Fairhurst crossed twice for Albion, with Ben Harper and Charlie McCurrie also touching down.

The hosts started the game strongly, and were attacking the Shevington line, but an errant pass was eagerly collected by the visitors’ winger who raced 80 yards to open the afternoon’s scoring.

The try did not appear to knock Albion out of their stride and they levelled within five minutes of falling behind.

The score came when centre Harper took an inside ball from half-back Matty Ellis and weaved his way to the line, with Rudd adding the conversion.

An error from the resulting restart offered the visitors good field position, from which they took full advantage to register a second converted try and regain the lead.

Again the hosts hit back. This time Ellis provided a fine long pass to wing Fairhurst, who beat his opposite number to score in the corner. Rudd added an excellent touchline conversion.

With no further scores the game was locked at half time

In contrast to the first half it was the visitors who started the second half strongly and on 45 minutes they regained the lead again with a converted try when they chose to run the ball on the last tackle to cross.

The scores were level again on 50 minutes. This time Rudd took the line on and slipped a pass to McCurrie who barged his way over the whitewash, again Rudd adding the extras.

Latchford were again found guilty of not respecting possession when the visitors intercepted a wayward pass for the second time in the game to re-establish a six-point lead entering the last 15 minutes.

Albion then laid siege to the Shevington line, with captain and talisman Danny Brown leading from the front, and on 78 minutes they were rewarded.

Hooker Charlie Groarke went blind from dummy half and fed Fairhurst who acrobatically scored right at the corner flag.

Rudd’s subsequent conversion agonisingly sailed wide and the visitors held on to seal the victory.

This Saturday sees Albion on their travels when they face Thatto Heath Crusaders A, kick off 2.30pm.

Woolston Rovers A will entertain Liverpool Lizards in the North West Men's League Division Three at Monk Sports Club on Saturday, kick-off 2.30pm, looking to make it four wins on the bounce in all competitions.

They were 36-10 victors at Halton Simms Cross at the weekend.

Coach Liam Lawton said: “Our performances over the past three weeks have been absolutely top drawer and we are hoping for the same again this weekend.

"The confidence in the side is growing each week and we are becoming a very difficult side to play against.

"We have already faced Liverpool twice this season so it would be nice if we could make it a hat-trick of wins over them.”

Simmies opened the scoring after 11 minutes when quick hands saw the ball reach full back Nathan Outten who scored wide out on the right and then five minutes later stand-off Jack White chipped over the Rovers defence and collected the ball before rounding two defenders and putting scrum-half Ryan McCann over wide out on the left. White added the conversion.

Rovers got back into the game just after the midway point of the half when a strong drive from prop forward Lewis Dawson put Rovers within five metres of the Simms Cross line and hooker Dec Houghton found full-back James Tarpey linking into the line and he shot through a gap to score on the right.

Four minutes later a superb long ball from scrum-half Dec Leonard sent centre Kieran Jones away and he raced 40 metres outpacing the chasing cover to score between the posts.

Stand-off Craig Lawton added the conversion to level matters and then added a penalty right on the stroke of half time to give Rovers a 12-10 interval advantage.

The kick off at the start of the second half by Rovers was dropped by Simmies and from the resulting play-the-ball Lawton found second-row Ryan Palin at speed and he ran over three defenders to score. Lawton converted.

Six minutes later a great break from his own 20-metre line by Lawton saw him send substitute Niall Toher away and a quick play-the-ball and great weaving run by Palin split the Simmies defence and he slipped a lovely inside ball to prop forward Sean Withington who scored between the posts.

Rovers were now in a rampant mood and a fine ball out wide from Tarpey found Jones who raced clear and weaved through the defence to cross again between the posts.

Soon after a knock on by Simmies was pounced on by Palin and he put Tarpey away to score between the posts. Lawton added the conversion and then the referee called time early at Simms Cross' request.

The man of the match honour to Rovers second-row Ryan Palin, who was well supported by full-back James Tarpey and centre Louie Angelo.

Rovers A coach Liam Lawton said: “That was a really solid performance from us.

"We started a little slowly and allowed Simmies to get a couple of tries but once we started to complete our sets we slowly turned things around and played some wonderful rugby that saw us score several fantastic tries.

"We are playing with a lot of confidence now and we just need to continue in this vein.”
