MARK Beesley said he was pleased with the way his Warrington Town side adapted to the difficult playing surface during yesterday’s 3-0 win at Stalybridge Celtic.

On a poor, sloped pitch at Bower Fold, Matt Grivosti netted twice as Yellows rebounded from their midweek loss to Morpeth Town to keep themselves on track for a play-off spot.

Grivosti struck early to give Town a half-time lead and while they had to ride out some sustained Celts pressure early in the second half, his second goal along with Luke Duffy’s strike killed the game.

They have now won four of their last six games and retain their three-point cushion inside the Northern Premier League Premier Division’s top five.

“It was important we bounced back from Tuesday, although watching the game back I didn’t think we were that bad,” he said.

“We gave poor goals away and when you do that, you’re always up against it. It was important today that we kept a clean sheet.

“The pitch was poor for both teams – really difficult to play on – and you have to adapt your game to that.

“You can’t be playing flowing, expansive football on it so we wanted to play in their half as best we could.

“We could have done better on a few instances and if we’d have gone in at half-time 2-0 up, it gives them a mountain to climb.

“At 1-0, they started the second half really well and we were sloppy. We can’t give teams 15 minutes at us, even though Dan didn’t have to make a save.”

Beesley also hailed the impact of the substitutes he sent on during the second period, in particular Duffy and Bohan Dixon.

Forward Duffy scored with one of his first touches to put Town two goals to the good while Dixon, who was making his return following a two-game ban, steadied the ship in midfield.

“I think the substitutions changed the game a bit for us and gave us a bit of a lift,” Beesley said.

“Duffers came on and got a goal and Bohan gave us that calming influence that we were missing at that point.”

Yellows’ next fixture sees them welcome in-form Ashton United to Cantilever Park on Saturday.
