IF Warrington Wolves are to make an impact in the Super League play-offs, they must be able to build more pressure on teams.

Those were the thoughts of head coach Steve Price after their dramatic golden-point victory over Salford Red Devils.

George Williams’ kicked a drop goal to win the game in the first extra period having earlier swapped late one-pointers with Salford’s Tui Lolohea.

The Wire went into the final quarter behind as they squandered several opportunities to extend their four-point half-time lead, with Lolohea then putting Salford two points ahead.

Normal time finished dramatically as Williams had a last-second drop goal ruled out as referee Scott Mikalauskas penalised Wolves for blocking the Red Devils chasers.

The visitors then failed to find touch with the post-hooter penalty, sparking a frantic scramble in which both sides made ultimately unsuccessful line breaks.

“It had everything,” Price said.

“It was a great game for the spectators and for the farewell. It was a good way to finish to thank everyone.

“Ben Currie came up with a huge play – a tackle then a charge-down when they shifted it to the left. That was a massive game-changer.

“It goes to show what a top player George is to ice those three field goals under pressure – the second was a really stiff penalty with the blockers.

“Ellis Longstaff really stood up today – he played it really tough through that middle third.

“I’m really pleased for the younger guys as that will hold them in really good stead going forward.

“We’ve got a really good opportunity to learn from this game. With what’s going to happen in the coming weeks, we can’t afford to not be building pressure.

“There’s too many pressure releases in our game at present and we need to fix it up quick smart. It’s an opportunity to keep learning.

“We made an error in the first set after half time and put ourselves right under pressure again.

“In saying that, we showed resilience and guts in the way we carried ourselves as a team.”

The Wire made several changes to their team, with Jake Mamo, Chris Hill and Mike Cooper rested and Danny Walker, Daryl Clark and Joe Philbin injured.

Their absences were punctuated by the loss of Sitaleki Akauola in the warm-up, with youngster Tom Whitehead coming into the 17 although he did not get off the bench.

Eribe Doro, Ellis Longstaff and Connor Wrench came into the team while Matt Davis started at hooker, Blake Austin played in the second row and Jack Hughes spent long periods of time at prop.

After the game, the club bid farewell to departing players and staff members, including Price, Lee Briers and Chris Hill among others.

The vast majority of the crowd stayed behind to send those leaving off and Price praised them for their support ahead of one more home match in the play-offs on September 23.

“It was a fitting farewell for the players and staff that are leaving and our supporters were fantastic,” he said.

“We need them again – in two weeks, we need the HJ rocking.

“We’ve got to get better. We’ve got to apply pressure for longer periods if we’re going to go any further.”
