EAGLE eventually saw off a physical Widnes third team – but not without a fight.
It was not until the final 10 minutes that the visitors truly broke the shackles, with Joe Miller, Niall Toher and James Lloyd crossing to give them some comfort with a 26-5 scoreline.
Before then, the two teams slugged it out for a try each, with Ste Leigh getting Eagle’s score.
“We played into Widnes’s hands for much of the game,” Eagle coach Steve Yates said.
“We learnt early on they would put in some big hits. They took full advantage of the offside line to stifle any attacking play, but we kept running in close.
“Luckily when we got the ball in broken play late on, we were able to move the ball around to find the gaps.”
In what is their final game before the Christmas break, Eagle welcome Oswestry’s seconds to Thornton Road on Saturday.
