MANAGER Dave McNabb says his Rylands side played some “frightening” football that was “a joy to watch” in their first FA Vase tie for almost three decades.

Jay White’s hat-trick helped seal a dominant 6-0 win over Barnsley-based Athersley Recreation in the first qualifying round.

New signing Freddie Potter scored a brace – his first two goals for the club – after Blues were set on their way by Callum Lees’ goal in the very first minute.

Rylands have not featured in the competition since 1990 but will now face Rossington Main at Gorsey Lane in the second qualifying round on Saturday, September 14.

"We started the game very well and got the first goal early on,” McNabb said.

“Some of the football played today – particularly in the first half – was frightening and the players deserve all the credit.

“The first half was probably some of the best football we’ve played so far this season and it was a joy to watch at times.

"The second half wasn’t as good and the tempo dropped a little, but that’s to be expected.

“Fair play to Athersley as well, who didn’t give up and worked really hard.

“Ultimately, we’re in the hat for the next round and that’s all that matters."

Blues are back in North West Counties League Premier Division action on Saturday as they travel to Winsford United, kick off 3pm.
