STEPPING out at Wembley Stadium will be the crowning glory of three decades’ work for a “rugby-mad” Great Sankey High School teacher.

Andrew Gee – the school’s head of PE – has helped bring through players such as Gareth O’Brien and brothers Rhys and Ben Evans during his time at Great Sankey but a Wembley appearance has always eluded his teams.

When Great Sankey’s year seven side take on Standish High School in the Champion Schools final – the traditional curtain-raiser to the Challenge Cup Final – that will change.

Warrington Wolves Foundation community coach Lee Westwood, who helps coach the team, says Mr Gee’s commitment to schools rugby league has not gone unnoticed among the players.

“The kids want to win it for him. They love him to bits,” he said.

“He’s been trying for this for 30 years so I’m sure the kids will find that extra one per cent to do it for him.

“He’s had Gaz O’Brien, Rhys and Ben Evans and a few players who just floated below Super League level. He’s done a fantastic job and he’s rugby mad.

“For schools rugby in Warrington, it’s great having a character like him.”

Great Sankey’s road to Wembley was completed by a semi-final victory over Brooksbank School at Crosfields in June.

However, their route to the national stadium has already taken them past final opponents Standish in the north west competition.

The Warrington school won that day but Westwood says that will count for nothing when they meet their Wigan-based opponents again tomorrow.

“When we played them in the north west final, the weather was absolutely terrible,” he said.

“The rain was pouring down and whoever controlled the ball would win.

“It will be very, very close at Wembley and it will be about who holds their nerve the most.

“Hopefully because they are young, nerves won’t get to them as much.

“They’ve got some very, very quick players but if we defend as well as we can and attack as well as we can, we stand a very good chance.

“It’s a final, though, and anything can happen.

“If you can’t get excited for this, what can you get excited for?

“Going out on the field at Wembley is massive but they are focused on winning the cup.

“They’re going into it with that final mindset, which is really good.”
