Woolston Rovers A 22 Wigan St Patricks A 44
WOOLSTON Rovers A bowed out of the North West Men's League Trophy quarter finals against higher division opponents.
Matt Lowe's side fought back to 22-12 behind at the break, after falling 16-0 within the opening quarter, but were unable to prevent St Pats pulling away in the second half.
“I cannot fault the effort of the lads against a good St Pats side," said Woolston A's head coach.
"We gave them too much of a start and that proved difficult to claw back despite a very gallant effort from all 17 players.
"We played some outstanding rugby, scoring some fine tries, and hopefully we can now take that into our remaining league games.”
Centre Patryk Mazur made a 70-metre break down the middle of the field to score Rovers' opener, converted by Liam Sullivan.
Declan Leonard put winger Kieran Jones over for Rovers' second effort.
Rovers never gave up despite St Pats taking command.
Jimmy Evans went over for a try in the left corner from a quick tap penalty.
Mazur crossed for his second try following a kick over the St Pats defence.
