AFTER what co-manager Andy Dawson called a “frustrating” season, Greenalls PSO were at least able to end it with some silverware.

A goal from captain Mark Hughes ensured Greens brought home the Cheshire Football League President’s Cup for the first time thanks to a 1-0 win over Middlewich Town in Saturday’s final.

Winning a trophy somewhat tempers the disappointment of finishing 12th in the Premier Division and Dawson, who picks the team alongside Chris Brown, believes it is a good starting point upon which to build.

“I’m really happy that we were able to win the trophy at the end of a frustrating season,” he said.

“It was a tough game and a game where the trophy could have easily been taken away from us, but we stuck together and showed the character we expect.

“When Chris and I came down at the start of the season, we made it clear that we wanted to win trophies at Greenalls.

“Although we have finished poorly in the league – which we don’t accept – winning this cup has ended the season on a positive note and it’s a starting point for us to build on.”

The only goal of a tight game at Knutsford FC’s Manchester Road came as a result of a mix-up in the Middlewich defence following Alex Hardman’s long free kick.

With the goalkeeper stranded and the ball loose, Hughes reacted quickest to tap the ball into an empty net.
