WARRINGTON Town’s latest crack at promotion to the National League North comes to the crunch this evening as they start their play-off campaign.

Yellows host Nantwich Town in the Evo-Stik Premier Division play-off semi-final – the first of three games they will have to win if they are to join Farsley Celtic in the league above.

Here’s everything you need to know about tonight’s game and what may or may not follow it…

Who, what, where and when?

But hang on – didn’t Warrington reach the play-offs last year?

They did – and it ended at this very stage with a 3-0 home defeat to Grantham Town.

However, Yellows go into this year’s shake-up in much better form – they are unbeaten in their past eight games – and with a squad that is pretty much at full strength.

Last season, they were missing several players through injury and suspension and it caught up with them when they could least afford it to.

Okay, well what happens if it’s a draw?

Unlike the ties in higher divisions, play-offs at this level are one-legged affairs so whatever happens, this tie will be decided tonight.

If we are level are 90 minutes, 30 minutes of extra time will be played (two 15-minute halves). If we are still all square after that, the match will be decided by a penalty shoot-out.

Yellows have home advantage as they finished higher than Nantwich in the final league table – Town finished third with the Dabbers fourth, 15 points behind.

What if Town win tonight?

First of all, happy days!

Once the celebrations have died down, attention switches to Saturday and the play-off final in which they would face the winner of the other semi between South Shields and Buxton.

If Shields win, they will host the final but if the Bucks progress, we will be back at Cantilever Park on Saturday.

Either way, it would be a 3pm kick off.

So, win tonight and win Saturday – job done?

Unfortunately not.

Annoyingly, this will be the only year in which winning the play-offs will NOT guarantee a place in the National League North.

Whoever comes through the Evo-Stik Premier Division’s play-offs will face the winner’s of the Southern League Central’s equivalent – which will be contested by King’s Lynn Town, Stratford Town, Alvechurch and Stourbridge – in a “super play-off.”

The good news for Yellows is that, should they reach this stage, they are guaranteed to be at home as they have a better points-per-game ration than any of their four potential opponents.

That game would take place on Saturday, May 11.
