ELLE Kadir led an excellent Warrington Youth Rowing team effort at the largest indoor rowing event in the world on Friday.

Kadir – a year 10 student at Culcheth High School – picked up a silver medal from the National Indoor Rowing Championships in a year 10 girls’ field of 168 competitors by rowing 1,337 metres in five minutes.

In the same category, Sir Thomas Boteler High School’s Ifiyenia Marinos was unfortunate to miss out on a medal as her row of 1,308m was enough to place her fourth.

Overall, 14 Warrington Youth Rowing members from seven high schools around the town competed at London’s Copper Box Arena alongside more than 2,500 fellow competitors, with rowers’ distances measured over set time limits depending on age.

There were two Warrington rowers in the top 10 of the year eight boys’ category as Cardinal Newman’s Alfie Fairhall and Sir Thomas Boteler’s Tom Gilmore finished eighth and 10th respectively.

Michael Kadir – also a Culcheth High pupil alongside sister Elle – was fourth in the year nine boys’ race with Sir Thomas Boteler’s Jonah Holland not far behind in 17th.

Amy Groves from Birchwood Community High School was ninth in the year eight girls’ age group while she also helped the Warrington team to a fifth-place relay finish in that age group, with the boys team coming 12th.
