WOLVES have poured focus into rectifying attacking deficiencies ahead of the 'derby' with Widnes Vikings tomorrow, Friday.

The Wire travel to their arch-rivals on the back of an 11-0 defeat to bottom side Huddersfield last Friday, a reverse which was Wolves’ second in succession.

Tony Smith said that, while the adverse conditions in West Yorkshire played a part, his team needed to be better tactically.

“There certainly wasn’t enough energy put into some of our attack," said Smith, who has ensured his men have spent more time on the training field this week.

"We invested a lot in our defence and it was terrific but tactically, Huddersfield’s kicking game was much, much better than ours.

“Even when we made a couple of breaks we weren’t there in numbers to finish it off which showed where our energy levels were and it cost us when we did create opportunities.

“We didn’t help ourselves. We were trying hard but just not in the right manner and when we watched the game together the next day it was fairly obvious to us the areas in which we need to improve in attack.

"We’ve spent some time rectifying that this week. We’ve spent more time on the park than probably what we’ve been able to do in recent times.

“We’re now getting into the weekly routine of Friday to Friday matches so we’ve been able to get a bit more out of them on the park and spent a bit more time getting some combinations together.”

Warrington travel to the Select Security Stadium to face a Widnes side looking for revenge for their 28-10 defeat at The Halliwell Jones Stadium on Good Friday.

Vikings have lost all three of their Super League games since then before a 64-6 thrashing of Rochdale in the Challenge Cup at the weekend when they welcomed back skipper Kevin Brown and ex-Wolves centre Chris Bridge from injury.

Smith says Denis Betts’ side provide dangerous opposition as Wolves aim to get back on track.

“It’s always a challenge to go there, they have a terrific support and we usually take a good crowd as well so it adds to the atmosphere,” he said.

“The surface (artificial) certainly challenges every team that goes there and we’ve got to make sure that we handle that as best we can.

“Kevin Brown can turn games on their head single handedly so we’re going to have to be right on our game with him and plenty others as well. Joe Mellor’s having a great season and there’s others that are very good players so we’ll have a healthy respect for them.”
