BROWSE THE MATCH PICTURES ABOVE AND SEE HOW KILHEENEY CELEBRATES THE TEAM'S 100TH GOAL IN THE LAST IMAGE
WHEN the 100th league goal of Warrington Town’s record-breaking season arrived, it would have been a fair shout that it would come from Ciaran Kilheeney.
And it did, the first of the skipper’s brace helping Yellows to take another step towards the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League First Division North title with a 3-0 win at Prescot Cables today.
It is the first time Town, still 16 points clear of Spennymoor after their 3-1 home win against Burscough, have achieved a ton of goals in a season, while 28 wins in a campaign is a club record too.
League leading scorer Kilheeney’s strike could not have come at a better time, too, sending his team into the dressing rooms at half time after doubling the lead seconds earlier.
After a one-two with Scott Metcalfe, ‘Killer’ Kilheeney finished sweetly to give his side breathing space at 2-0.
He finally killed off the game with a penalty, taking his season’s tally to 30, in the 83rd minute resulting from Chris Gahgan being brought down in the box soon after entering play off the bench.
Town had initially gone ahead in the 27th minute when Gerard Kinsella nodded home a cross from Ally Brown.
The closest Prescot came to a goal was when sub James Edgar shot against a post in the 74th minute.
Northwich Vics, title contenders themselves for the majority of the season, dropped to fourth place after a 2-2 draw at Trafford saw them slip behind Glossop North End 24 points adrift of the table toppers.
Another great win for Warrington Town today, and Northwich only drew. The title is in sight!
