BRETT Hodgson is set to undergo surgery to fix a knee injury sustained against Salford City Reds.

“Hodgo won’t be playing this weekend because of some floating matter behind his knee which needs tidying up,” said Wolves’ head of coaching and rugby Tony Smith.

“He is booked in for keyhole surgery on Friday afternoon and will be out for a couple of weeks.”

The 35-year-old will join Chris Bridge and Ben Harrison on Wolves’ injury list, after Smith revealed that both players’ expected returns from respective abdominal and hamstring injuries have been delayed after advice from specialists.

However, there is generally positive news for Warrington on the injury front this week, with Michael Monaghan, Adrian Morley and Rhys Evans lined up to play over the weekend.

Smith admitted that Monaghan was saved especially for the visit of Hull on Friday, but left Evans and Morley’s immediate future up in the air.

“Rhys Evans will be available but likely to play Sunday,” he said, referring to the option of appearances with partner club Swinton Lions against North Wales Crusaders on Sunday.

“Moz will be in our 19, but whether he plays Friday or Sunday has not been decided yet.

“I will sit down with Moz and decide what is best for him and the team.”

If Morley features against Hull, it is likely Glenn Riley will return to Swinton this weekend.

Wolves welcome the in-form Airlie Birds to The Halliwell Jones Stadium tomorrow, Friday, a team on the up having welcomed marquee signing Gareth Ellis back from injury in recent weeks.

Smith is no stranger to Ellis’ quality, having signed him for his Super League-winning Leeds Rhinos squad in 2005.

“Gareth is a quality player with a lot of experience,” said Smith.

“He is a good leader and there are plenty of facets to his game that Hull will be delighted to have back.

“They have had some good performances in recent times and it is little wonder as they have some great players.”
