MOMENTUM continues to build after another good performance.

From the start Wolves looked determined to defend as well as they had done in recent games.

The biggest difference between now and their recent defensive woes is that they appear to be looking forward to defending.

Of course it is always easier to be enthusiastic about something you’re doing well, but equally you can’t do anything well without enthusiasm.

To describe some of the tries Wire scored as ‘soft’ would be being generous to Salford, three of the four tries in the first half would’ve had coach Brian Noble fuming.

To take too much credit away from Wire’s attack would be harsh though, they looked lively throughout, with plenty of creativity and cohesion, both of which not surprisingly increased with the introduction of Briers.

Having received a hero’s welcome when he joined the fray in the second half, he produced a fairy tale try just a few minutes later with a classic dummy followed by a jinking run.

Wire’s attack was especially impressive given the wet weather. Like last season the changing of personnel and the positions those players play doesn’t seem to be affecting the quality of the performances.

It’s getting to that stage when Tony Smith will be having the problem all coaches most want, having too many top class players in good form to pick from. Last week Huddersfield felt they had been ‘bullied’ by Wire.

That may sound like a complaint, but it’s actually one of the biggest compliments you can get from your opponents in rugby league.

Something else that opponents might often feel is that they have been ‘out-enthused’.

As the weeks pass the team spirit seems to be growing, it’s most noticeable after a handling error when teammates trot over for a pat on the back to keep that player’s spirits up, it also shows up after a good piece of defence results in mass congratulations.

Ratchford’s look of anguish after his dropped ball resulted in Salford’s only try showed two things, how much this team hate conceding tries and just how much they despise letting teammates down. The upturn in performances have come immediately after the team had their own post-match gathering at Wakefield, that may be coincidence but it was another sign of the togetherness and the desire to reach high standards.
