SHOPPERS took a step in the right direction towards a fairtrade future.

Golden Square shopping centre was taken over by fairtrade campaigners on Saturday to mark the end of Fairtrade Fortnight with taste testings, hand massages and foot painting.

The theme was Take a Step for Fairtrade and shoppers were encouraged to add their footprint to using fairtrade products. And at the end of the day the footstep figure had reached 444.

Jackie Hancock, one of the event organisers from Warrington Fairtrade Steering Group, said “It was very encouraging to hear from many Warrington children that they had been learning about fairtrade at school.

“Lots of children had a clear understanding that when someone takes the small step of regularly buying a fairtrade product it produces a giant leap in the living standards of a farmer in a developing country.”
