MORE must be done to keep traffic moving if the number boats on the Manchester Ship Canal is doubled.

Liberal Democrats in the town are seeking to meet Peel Holdings, who own the canal, to broker talks.

More than 4,000 people have signed a petition protesting against plans for a new port at Moore.

It would see the the swing bridges to south Warrington close five times or more a day instead of once or twice as now.

Campaigners say the company needs to take account of Warrington’s unique position on the canal.

Ann Raymond, chairman of the Lib Dems, said: “We have collected 4,000 names on our petition asking Peel Ports to come forward with measures to stop the town being regularly gridlocked.

“We have contacted Peel Ports to request a meeting.

“Although they have responded, they have not yet agreed to meet with us. We will continue to press for a meeting, so we can deliver the petition and put forward the views of the thousands of people who took time to sign the petition.

“It is worse if there are other traffic pressures at the same time like a problem on the M6.

“We have had stalls in the street and shops and were surprised just how few people are aware of these plans.”

Clr Brian Axcell (Appleton) added: “I am particularly concerned that the Labour council has written to Peel Ports more or less endorsing the plan.

“Traffic chaos resulting from more swing bridge closures won’t just be a problem in the south of the town but right across Warrington.

“Of course it is good to get freight off the roads and on to canals.

“But if Peel Ports intend to let most boats go through at peak traffic times, as they do now, the disruption to everyday life, emergency services and business in Warrington will be unacceptable.”
