WARRINGTON will bid for a share of £1 million to help revitalise Bridge Street.

Clr Bob Barr (LD – Lymm), deputy leader, had called on Labour’s town centre boss Clr Mike Hannon to put forward the case for Warrington to be one of 12 successful bids.

Clr Barr said: “The Government is to choose 12 towns to share in a pot of £1 million to help turn around their ‘unloved and unused’ high streets.

“Warrington needs such a boost to tide Bridge Street over until the regeneration programme we planned gets under way.

“I welcomed the Christmas ‘It’s All Going On in Warrington Town Centre’, initiative, but that was only for Christmas.

“The sign looks somewhat desolate over the barred up shop in Bridge Street now.”

Clr Mike Hannon has confirmed Warrington will be bidding.

He said: “We made the town centre one of our top priorities and our programme of quick wins has already started to bear fruit with lots more to do and see in the town.

“It’s been good to see people voting with their feet – Warrington is bucking the national trend by getting more shoppers and visitors into its town centre.”
