TODAY we are adding the Warrington Guardian’s support to the campaign to bring the 2013 Rugby League World Cup to town.

In four weeks, the Rugby Football League (RFL) will announce which bids have been successful ahead of the game’s biggest competition.

Venues will be selected across England and Wales, and towns and cities are also battling to host one of the 14 teams for the duration of the tournament.

And we are calling on the RFL to make sure Warrington is at the heart of the cup, staging games and being a base for one of the teams.

Tomorrow, Friday, The Halliwell Jones Stadium will host the two best teams in the world – Australia and New Zealand – to kick start the Four Nations.

More than 10,000 fans have already bought tickets with a bumper crowd expected to watch the likes of Darren Lockyer, Greg Inglis and Benji Marshall.

In two years’ time it could again be gracing the biggest names in the sport.

But the World Cup will not just be something for rugby fans to savour.

Experts predict the town could benefit to the tune of more than £2 million with hotels, pubs, restaurants and shops all set to cash in.

And the legacy from the event will stretch even further.

From the volunteers who will show visitors around our town to the youngsters who will try out a new sport and the artists who will take part in cultural activities – this has the potential to boost everyone in the borough.

Which is why the announcement in four weeks’ time is simple. It has to be The Halliwell Jones Stadium – it has to be Warrington.

Back the bid for 2013.
