THREE men arrested after a rugby fan was left fighting for his life have been released without charge.

The men aged 27, 30 and 30, from Pontefract, West Yorkshire, were arrested after David Singer was set upon after the Championship One Grand Final between Halifax and Featherstone on September 26 at The Halliwell Jones Stadium.

The 32-year-old victim, a paramedic, was walking towards Dallam Lane where the coaches were parked when he was attacked at around 8.15pm.

Mr Singer, a Halifax fan, had been to watch the match with a friend and his parents.

He remained in a coma for months and remains in a specialist hospital in the north east where he is showing signs of improvement.

Cheshire Police held a press conference in Wakefield in a bid to find the offenders and the arrests followed.

Officers also addressed more than 1 million rugby league fans at the Grand Final at Old Trafford in October after believing that fans knew who committed the crime.

Detectives believe he was attacked by Featherstone fans were seen behaving aggressively towards Halifax supporters.

DI Steve Jones, who is leading the investigation, said: “We remain committed to bringing to justice whoever is responsible for this vicious and unprovoked assault on David Singer.

"Similarly we are confident that there are still individuals who have not come forward and reported what they saw, or information they have about what happened that evening.

"We continue to explore all avenues of investigation and evidence is being constantly reviewed.

"We appeal to supporters who travelled to Warrington that night to do the right thing and report any information - however minor you feel it could be - that may be vital to this investigation.”

The men arrested were due to answer bail on Tuesday but the investigation was dropped by police.
