A TEENAGE girl has admitted conning her way into an elderly disabled man's home in a bid to burgle the property.

Kathlenn McCann and a friend appeared at the door of the deaf 80-year-old pensioner's house in Fairfield at 9.45pm on December 12 last year.

Judge Roger Dutton heard at Warrington Crown Court on Friday that they claimed to be there to do something with the central heating.

Although the pensioner was cautious at first, he let them in after they mentioned a relative of his.

Once inside the house, the girls split up.

The court heard that one went into the kitchen and starting looking through the cupboards. When he challenged her, she said she was looking for the central heating.

The man then needed the toilet and when he returned a few minutes later and went into the living room he realised they had gone.

They had made an untidy search of the house but he could not see that anything had been taken. He later recognised McCann at a video identification parade.

The judge was told that the 19-year-old, who lives at a caravan park on Ruthin Road near Wrexham, had seven convictions for 15 offences.

But Michael Davies, defending, said: "She was not the leading light in this, she would say she was led by her friend.

"This is a young woman who has had quite a dreadful time of it."

Judge Dutton gave the teenager a suspended jail term of six months and said: "You cannot carry on as you have done. If you do so, the day will inevitably be reached when you go straight to prison and that, for you, would be a particularly awful experience.

"You have got your own difficulties but you cannot always hide behind these and you must take responsibility for yourself."
