THE successful Warrington Wolves team will be made honorary citizens of the borough in recognition of their success in retaining the Carnegie Challenge Cup.
Councillors unanimously backed a motion to bestow the civic honour on the team at a full council meeting on Monday night.
Clr Ian Marks, leader of the council, said: “It’s a gesture of the council to the team for the incredible work they’ve done for the town and the game.”
Clr Keith Bland added: “Everybody in this town is proud of what they have achieved.”
Labour councillors added their support but asked for more tributes to the team that could be seen by residents and visitors.
Clr Mike Hannon said: “We should have Warrington signposts saying ‘the home of Warrington Wolves’. That would have more impact and create a lot of civic pride.”
The council said they would look into putting the team name on signs.
