FIREFIGHTERS will be visiting places of worship to hand out safety leaflets before an important religious festival for Hindu, Sikh and Jain communities in the town.

Diwali celebrations, which take place on Friday, involve decorating homes with candles and oil lamps known as divas as well as fireworks.

Blue Watch from Warrington Fire Station will be attending the Sikh Gurdwara temple in Latchford to enjoy the celebrations and also give out important safety messages to the celebrating communities.

Crew Manager Damian Wight, who has helped organise the visit, said: "With the increase use in candles and oil lamps at this special time it is really important that we spread candle and firework safety messages without dampening the celebrations.”
